Embedding URLs

The following notes should help you if you are having difficulty getting the applet to work once you have licensed it. It's important that you specify the URLs associated with your Web site or WAP services correctly.

The SmartPhone Emulator Web Site Edition needs to know about two kinds of URL to work properly

The target WAP service which is used whenever the emulator starts up

and the web pages on which you have installed the applet.

In both cases, you must provide a fully-qualified URL. It's easy to make mistakes with URLs so please read the following notes and check you are specifying everything correctly.

The Web Site Edition must have a WAP URL associated with it in order for it to work. Every Web Site Edition license you purchase corresponds to a single WAP service, identified by its WAP URL. When you register we give you one free license which expires 10 days after you specify the WAP URL. You can convert the complimentary license into a full one (even after it has expired) by purchasing a license on-line.

Remember that the SmartPhone Emulator is designed to reject any attempts to use your license(s) that do not come from your own pages. This prevents other Web sites using your license, which you have paid for. The consequence of this kind of security is that if you aren't precise when nominating where on your site the applet will appear, your own attempts to use the emulator will also be rejected. You'll see a "Not Licensed" error on the emulator screen if this is happening.

The URLs you specify must be fully-qualified -- which means, they should be complete, and are effectively what you'd have to type into a remote browser in order to see the page you are describing. You might be surprised to know that it is possible to specify intranet/local URLs as valid URLs for containing the applet. For example, if you are building a web page on your machine locally and accessing your page as, for example, http://potato then you can add this as one of your web URLs. This will only work if you have Internet access when you are testing your page -- the applet must be loaded from our servers. To prevent other people using your license, you cannot add http://localhost as one of your web URLs.

Trailing slashes are automatically stripped off any web URLs you enter (so http://www.mysite.com/ is stored as http://www.mysite.com). Query variables are also stripped -- if your URL usually has a ? in it (such as http://www.mysite.com/zodiac.cgi?sign=capricorn) , you only need enter the part before the first ? (in this case, http://www.mysite.com/zodiac.cgi).
